introduction. student dropout in medical colleges is a significant problem unless is controlled. it will result in shortages exacerbation of qualified physicians that may occur in future years. methods. a retrospective study was done for evaluation of student dropout risk factors. the students, according to the average grade of university, were classified into two groups (successful – unsuccessful). results. the list of risk factors and results were: average grade of high school, interest in medicine, motivation and the educational degree of parents. these factors, in the successful group were higher than in the unsuccessful group. the interval between finishing high school and coming to the university (66%) in the unsuccessful group was more than one year, but in about 85% of the successful group was without interval or one year (p<0.0001). home: 75.6% of the the successful group lived in dormitory (p<0.0001). having another occupation in addition to education was in about 28.3% of the unsuccessful group against 6% of the successful group (p<0.001) . program for study: about 50.1% of the unsuccessful group had no program for studying (p<0.05). married and unmarried: 50.1% of the unsuccessful group were married and 18.3% of the succssful group were married (p<0.0001). presence in the class: according to the data had no correlation with success (p>0.1). conclusion. these findings can be used in improvement of educational programs.
